Madrid & ToledoHow Art Distorts Reality (2026)

Four works made during a study trip to Madrid and Toledo in October 2026.

Theodor made the series in museums rather than in a studio. He drew on location, in response to the artworks around him and the atmosphere of the two cities, often kneeling on the floor or working on gallery benches with the sketchbook on his lap.

The series explores how artists transform and reinterpret reality through distortion, fragmentation and expression. It was made in the spirit of Goya's Black Paintings. Each page was developed by drawing, cutting, rearranging and collaging.

The four works are shown in their intended sequence: I — Celebration, II — Terror, III — Spiritual Light, IV — From Life to Death.

Portraits & Studies

Portraits and studies in graphite, coloured pencil and ink, worked from observation and photographic reference, 2025 – 2026. Select a work to see it larger.

Process

How a work moves from observation and reference to a finished composition.

Madrid & Toledo: drawing, cutting, collage

The Madrid & Toledo works began in the galleries, not in a studio. The location photos show the first stage: Theodor drawing in ink on toned paper that already carries pieces of red and white paper. The pages were then developed into finished compositions.

  1. DrawOn location, in the galleries.
  2. CutDrawn and coloured papers are cut into pieces.
  3. RearrangeThe pieces are moved and recombined into a new composition.
  4. CollageThe pieces are fixed to the page and the composition is completed.

A portrait, section by section

Theodor works section by section. After a light pencil outline, he finishes each area completely, with full colour and detail, before moving to the next, so the drawing spreads across the page like a print. This is how he first learned to draw, and it is still his own way of working. At school he also works the classical way, building the whole image at once, as in the still life.

Work in progress

A drawing currently on the table. The line drawing is complete across the sheet, and colour is being added one area at a time, while the figure on the left is still line only. A light pencil grid is visible under the drawing.

Unfinished marker drawing: on the left a boy drawn only in black line, on the right a heron with a yellow beak and blue head, coloured in marker, over a light pencil grid
